PCC Intern Overview
-
Welcome to the PCC intern rotation! It is a great rotation to enhance your skills in general pediatric ambulatory care and teaching. You will see patients directly in the clinic alongside other learners. The rotation is also an opportunity to learn about the logistics of outpatient pediatrics (including referrals, prior authorizations, etc.). Finally, it is a resident-as-teacher opportunity to instruct other learners including interns and medical students.
-
The rotation relies on your open, honest, and timely feedback to improve. Please share your rotational experiences with the PCC attendings in real-time so that together, we can continue to enhance the rotation.
Admissions/Transfers
-
The PCC senior and intern work together for transfers to ER or admissions to the hospital (in lieu of any students).
-
The PCC senior resident typically puts in admission requests, contacts transport, and contacts the ER and/or consult hospitalist.
-
Whichever provider sees the patient should write a brief clinic note; the admitting team will write the H&P.
-
There are some very specific steps for admitting to UCLA hospital that are summarized at the senior desk; if you are in doubt about something you have to do, ask the attending!
Parent Calls
-
The clinic receives "Patient Calls" from a caretaker who wants to talk to the doctor.
-
Currently, during clinic hours, these calls should be triaged by the call center and directed to the nurse triage line, if needed. Calls will be directed to the PCC Senior Resident inbox on CareConnect. All calls should be directed to the clinic line at 310.825.0867. Please do not distribute the clinic backline number.
-
If the phone rings, answer the call, and assist the caller. When in doubt, ask the senior resident or an attending for help.
-
Be sure to document telephone encounters in CareConnect and route for co-signing to the PCC attending.
