Typical Schedule
-
Arrive ~7am (or however much time you need to pre-round)
-
Sign out from night team in AM is at 8am in the NICU conference room
-
Rounds in AM are usually after sign out but sometimes get delayed due to meetings etc… it is attending-based
-
Afternoons - variable; some attendings have you attend NICU deliveries others do not so just ask the attending you are rotating with. Otherwise follow-up on labs, read, see your patients
-
Sign out in PM is at 4pm in the NICU conference room
-
Neonatology conferences on Wednesday afternoons
-
Clinical duties are on weekdays only, weekends are off
EMR
-
If you don’t already have one, create a NICU list, and add “NICU” from units
-
Add Blue, Red, and Gold from Team Lists
Responsibilities
-
Write notes and place orders for the patients you are following
-
Check in with the patient’s individual nurses regarding touch times with all new patients
-
First hand washing of the day with chlorhexadine, then ok to Purell between patients.
-
Patients: Start with 4 patients/day, and add to your census as you like. You can add or drop patients if they are no longer active.
-
There are three teams and as a resident you should carry patients between the Red, Blue, and Gold teams so that you have an interesting variety of patients. Make sure you touch base with the attendings pre-rounds to let them know what patients you have.
-
Let the attendings know you are interested in doing procedures if you are. Availability is patient-dependent.
-
Workspaces include open computer areas. You can place your bags in the Pediatric work room or in open cabinet space so that your things remain secure
Logistics
-
Email Dr. Payton before the first day to see what patients to pick up so you can see them on your first day. Please inform him of which days you have clinic/back-up in this e-mail.
-
Pick up a voalte phone every AM from the NICU admin office (the one where all the parents check in); you can log in as nicures (pw 11111); let nurses/attendings know you're logged in so that you are the point of contact for your patients 🙂
