professionalism

As physicians-in-training, there are several general expectations for residents throughout our program.  You are expected to adhere to the following principles:

Patient Care

  • Pre-round, round, and attend to your patient load

  • Act as “first call” for all primary patients, including responding to patient concerns, making medical decisions, performance of medical procedures when appropriate, etc

  • Complete necessary work (e.g. notes and orders) thoroughly and in a timely fashion

  • Seek out assistance whenever it is needed

Education

  • Attend promptly and participate enthusiastically in all teaching conferences

  • Participate in teaching conferences when assigned

  • Meet with your mentor to review your performance periodically during training

  • Make and follow an individualized learning plan

  • Actively educate fellow residents and medical students

  • Give and receive constructive feedback

  • Completion of required steps of residency in a timely fashion (Step 3 in intern year, license and DEA application in second year, boards registration in third year, etc)

Integrity and Respect

  • Give and take appropriate sign-out for all hand-offs, within and between rotations. Expectation is that sign-out is verbal (in person or face to face). To only give email sign-out is appropriate only if both parties agree. The person giving sign-out should always adequately answer questions in a timely manner if indicated.

  • Make sure active issues are addressed before leaving for the day

  • Work within your team and help fellow residents out

  • Create and update patient hospital courses while on inpatient services to assist with coverage/work flow

  • Utilize backup appropriately (see Jeopardy section)

  • Treat clerks, nursing staff, and other ancillary members with respect and courtesy

  • Report duty hours honestly and in a timely fashion

Continuity clinic

  • Attend all continuity clinics as scheduled on AMION

  • Strive to maintain a panel of patients by actively scheduling patients to follow-up

  • Attend at least 36 clinics per year (schedule made by the chief residents)

  • Report any conflicts with continuity clinic promptly to the chief resident

  • Clear all elective (i.e. not required by duty hours violations) clinic changes with the chief resident
